BRISTOL COUNTY -- A 28-year-old Fall River man led police on a one-hour chase before smashing into a police cruiser early this morning in Fall River Ma. Fall River Police Chief Dan Racine said.

The man, identified as John Denny, was taken to the hospital, Racine said, Tuesday morning.

He faces charges that could include speeding, wreckless operation of a motor vehice, leaving the seen of an accident resulting in bodily injury to a police officer, illegal operation, marked line violations, as well as felony fleeing and eluding police, Racine said.

Police initially responded to a call 1:07 a.m. 911 call from the owner of a local mini mart about a man with a gun outside of the store, Racine said. What the deputies didn't realize at the time was that Denny had an arguement with a known gang member outside, he said.

The victims, a 36-year-old Fall River man, man and a 30-year-old man from Andover, were not harmed, Racine said.

Denny abandoned the vehicle after striking several police cruisers while taking off, and led officers on a foot chase near Father Kennedy Park.

"At one point in the foot pursuit, the individual was seen jumping into a dumpster" Racine said. "He didn’t want to get dirty."

The chase started again. Denny fired a round, Racine said. The officers backed off and lost him "because we’re talking 1-something in the morning in a wooded area."

What followed was a massive search that included between 60 and 70 police officers and dispatch personnel from both the bristol County Sheriff's Office and the Fall River Police Department, along with a Massachusetts State Police helicopter and tracking dogs.

Two officers found Denny inside a backyard shed at a house off North Main St.

"They re-approached the shed and found that the person was laying on the ground with his hands on his head."

Terry Walters, who lives on North Main St. in the neighborhood where Denny was found, said he believes the search for Denny ended at one of the houses behind his.

Walters went outside just before 8 a.m. Tuesday to let his dogs out and look for his copy of the morning paper and went back inside his when it wasn't there, unaware of the search. He came out again around 9:30 a.m. to find police cars parked in the neighborhood.

"First I thought somebody had a heart attack or something," he said.

A portion of his backyard fence had been knocked down at some point during the night or early morning. Police told him it was knocked down during their search, he said.

"Anybody in this neighborhood can walk around the neighborhood and feel safe," Walters said. "We don't really have any problems like that, not really. It's just a nice neighborhood."

Kathy Snyder, who lives just one street down, said the sound of a helicopter woke her family up at 4:20 a.m.

"This is like what you see on TV," Snyder said. "It was like, 'This has gotta be something big, because obviously they don't have helicopters for just anything.' It was scanning our back yard."

According to State Police records, Denny's criminal history dates back nearly 20 years. He's been convicted of multiple felonies, including gun charges in 2007 and possession of a weapon while discharging on a public way.

"I know he has a history of violent crimes and (the Fall River Police Department) was very familiar with this individual," Racine said.

Denny was taken to a local hospital. At noon Tuesday, Racine said he had no information on his condition.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
