The family and friends of 16 year old Katie Hawes are mourning her loss. Katie was in a car accident while she was traveling home from softball practice. Family and friends say that she was known and loved by everyone. Brian Lawson, Katie's current World History teacher, told WRDW, "Katie was very well-known around the school and community and was involved in everything. She was a very successful student and athlete, maintaining a 4.0 GPA and receiving multiple sports offers. Katie was a member of our varsity softball team here and received all-region recognition both years of her high school career. She was also a member of our basketball team, where she was starting point guard and received all-region recognition as a freshman and sophomore as well, tennis team, cross country team, track team, and was a member of the varsity cheerleading squad, all of which she excelled at. Katie told me one day that she wanted to be remembered, so she played every sport and tried her hardest. She was a naturally talented athlete who had very great potential. Katie was also very smart and creative. Not only did she keep a 4.0 GPA, but she also was beginning dual enrollment at Georgia Southern University as a sophomore. She juggled high school classes, multiple college classes, each school sport, and also her travel softball team at the same time. Katie was an amazing person all around and will truly be missed."
Her high school FCA advisor, Jacob Lord, told WRDW, "Hawes was extremely fond of her faith. She loved Jesus Christ with her heart and soul and was very dedicated to Him. Katie was her sophomore class leader for the Jenkins County FCA Chapter. She was trusted by her whole class and along with mine and Coach Lawson's decisions, she was voted in by her class to become sophomore class leader. She had an amazing testimony and had been through more loss than any kid should have to go through, so she understood death and the meaning of it. I know she was secure in her walk with Christ and I am confident that her soul rests with her maker now. Just keep all of us [family, friends, teachers] in your thoughts and prayers. It's been hard and will only get harder."
Katie was also voted by her peers as homecoming court representative both years of her high school career. "She had almost every vote in her class." Kim Dasher, Jenkins County Middle High School assistant principal, told WRDW. "I count the votes each year and both years of her eligibility, she received over 90 of her classes votes. She was so loved."
Her high school softball team will be holding a candle light vigil in honor of Katie, tonight at 7:00 p.m. on the Jenkins County High school softball field.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
