A shooting in Gate City left one man dead this afternoon.

Sgt. Bryan Shelton with Birmingham police said that officers received the call at 4:45 p.m. and responded to the scene on Joppa Court and Georgia Road.

When officers arrived, they found a man had been shot.

The 28-year-old victim was being transported by ambulance to the hospital when he died. His name has not been released.

Preliminary investigation showed the victim got into a physical altercation with the suspect, when the suspect shot the victim. The suspect then fled the scene.

Neither the suspect nor the victim had been seen in the area before this afternoon, and residents in the area did not recognize either of them.

"With both parties being unknown to residents, a key part for the investigation is discovering what the relationship was between the two individuals and why they were in the neighborhood," Shelton said.

The suspect was not in custody and police did not give a description of the person or of the vehicle he fled in.

During the month of September, there have been two other shootings at the same intersection. On September 11, one person was killed and five were injured. Police said as many as 60 shots were fired in that incident.

Days earlier, an officer was injured and a suspect shot during a foot chase.

Police said the child died at Childrens Hospital after he was struck outside of his home.

Sunday afternoon, just before the Gate City shooting, a teenager was shot in the Avondale neighborhood on 2nd Avenue South and 43rd Street.

Shelton said that victim received non-life-threatening injuries, and police have no suspects in custody.

An earlier shooting around 3:10 p.m. this afternoon left one adult dead. The 26year-old was outside of his Avenue Q home in Ensley when he was shot.

Multiple people were arguing over money at the man's home, and started shooting at one another. The man was caught in the crossfire.

He was taken to EAMC l where he died this afternoon.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
