ALTON - Don’t let the bed bugs bite — is not a saying that should ever apply to a grocery store, but one Alton couple said they were worried after visiting the Alton Scnucks grocery store.

Marion Kessel and his wife, Amanda, said they went to the Scnucks on Homer Adams Pkwy this past weekend. After shopping, our groceries were bagged up in brown paper sacks. "We usually bring our own bags", said Amanda, " but we forgot them at home this time". Upon arriving home and taking the food out of the bags, they saw hundreds of bugs crawling in the bottom of the bag. Mr. Kessel immediately took photos and a video of the infestation.

FOX2 asked a pest expert to watch the video, and he confirmed that the tiny brown insects are indeed bed bugs. Ian Campbell, who owns The Works Pest Control, said anybody who has purchased any groceries from this store may have brought bed bugs back to their home to start a new colony.

The Madison County Environmental Services Department is responsible for food inspections in Alton grocery stores. A spokesperson for environmental services said beg bugs found in a store that sells food would fall under their regulatory umbrella.

The department spokesman said this particular situation hadn’t been brought to the county’s attention. In general, however, he said someone would need to file a complaint about bed bugs that would be followed up by the department. If county inspectors find bed bugs, they mandate action by the store. Fines are unlikely if the store follows extermination instructions.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
